Mourinho: We need to make up for this against Helsinki

Read what Jose Mourinho had to say following Thursday's Europa League defeat against Ludogorets in Razgrad...

It feels like the result does not reflect the match. For 60 minutes you were in complete control, then what happened?

“I had the same feeling. I don’t want to say that we played well, because it’s not true, but it did at least seem to me more than enough to win the game – or at least not to lose it. Because before their goal it was us creating all the chances.

“After their goal we were in a tough spot for the first five or six minutes afterwards, because it’s normal that a team is going to do certain things when they are winning.

“We responded really well though and we had the chances to equalise. Then we did equalise and they scored again straight afterwards. It felt like everything went against us in this one. That being said, at least it was not a knock-out game – we still have five games to play.

“Obviously winning the first game leaves you in a more comfortable spot, while a defeat has put the pressure on a bit. But we have to focus on the what’s next: against Helsinki next week we need to pick up three points.”

Where can you do better? Where are you expecting to see an improvement? Perhaps in defence?

“I don’t like to talk about the defence, because in my opinion it is the whole team that defends – not just the three or four players who are in that unit. It’s about the way the team defends, for me.

“To tell you the truth, the second goal for them is down to emotion – we had equalised and, thinking a draw was still not an acceptable result, continued to push forward and take risks – and then the second goal comes out of nowhere. But the truth is it turned a draw into a defeat.”

Finally, your thoughts tonight after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II…

“I am very sad. I am not a foreigner in England; it’s my home and my family. We have lived there for many years. I am convinced that 100% of people have a huge amount of respect for this amazing figure, who I would not call ‘Her Majesty’ but ‘an incredible women’. I’m very sorry.”
