Smalling pleased with attitude heading into crucial finale to season

Chris Smalling felt a draw was the least Roma deserved, after Monday's meeting with Napoli finished 1-1.

The Giallorossi equalised late on through Stephan El Shaarawy, in a game where Lorenzo Insigne had given the hosts an early lead.

"I think we started the game well. I think we created a lot more chances than them," Smalling said.

"Our heads could have dropped after the penalty but we kept on fighting, we kept on trying and pushing and pushing. Even when we equalised I think we had another couple of chances too.

"So I think you are seeing a team that is really together and fighting. Like the manager said, good character and a good mentality shown tonight."

He added: "You are seeing a team that is really united [now]. Especially the players coming off the bench – in the last few games we’ve made changes in the second half that have gone on to make a big difference for us. So that’s shown the strength of our squad.

"I think we need to keep this mentality going until the end of the season and see where that gets us, and then next season try to have a lot more consistency like we have shown in recent games."

Smalling was asked how the team will balance a battle to try and finish fourth in Serie A with the impending Europa Conference League semi-final against Leicester City.

"Yeah, I think the good thing is we still have lots to play for," he said.

"We have the European semi-final, which is massive, but prior to that we have some big league games too. I think the fact we are fighting for fourth is good; it’s looking difficult but if we can keep winning our games then we can at least put the pressure on.

"And with the cup run as well we have the chance to finish the season with a trophy. So there is a lot to play for over these final few games."
