Then game may have remained goalless but it was certainly not without its drama, as both Jose Mourinho (during the game) and Luciano Spalletti (following the full-time whistle) received red cards from the referee.
On the pitch the action was less controversial - with Victor Osimhen's late header instantly and correctly ruled out for offside.
The Nigerian international also hit the post earlier in the game, while Tammy Abraham and Gianluca Mancini were both unable to convert decent openings for the hosts.
After Thursday's embarrassment in Europe, Mourinho returned to the side that started last weekend's game against Juventus - and was rewarded as Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini immediately imposed themselves on the contest.
But clear-cut chances were hard to come by, with both sides enjoying their spells on top, as Abraham fired wired from perhaps the best opening late in the first half.
In the second the game opened up further, with Pellegrini's late runs continuing to cause the visitors problems. But a decisive opening goal would never be forthcoming, as both sides seemed ultimately content to take a point for their efforts.
The Giallorossi have another busy week ahead of them: they travel to Cagliari on Wednesday night, before hosting AC Milan at the Olimpico next Sunday.
