The Giallorosse started in lively fashion in the game in Milan, eventually earning their reward as Annamaria Serturini steered home a clever opener.
But Christy Grimshaw's deep cross found the back of the net early in the second half, sparking into life the hosts - who could have won the game in the closing stages if not for the heroics of Roma goalkeeper Camelia Ceasar.
"It was a tough game," midfielder Thaisa said afterwards.
"Their goal was a bit lucky, but I think overall the result was a fair one. We did well but we need to make sure we keep improving.
"They made it tough for us in the second half. We still have work to do to make sure we can turn games like this from draws into wins."
It was something of a tale of two halves, with the visitors unlucky not to go into half-time with a bigger advantage. Andressa Alves had one chance cleared off the line just moments before she turned provider for Serturini, while Giada Greggi had a clear sight of goal in the moments before the break that she perhaps could have turned into a goal.
In the second half, however, Milan gradually gained a hold in the match; with Ceasar called into action to make important saves from both Lindsey Thomas and Valentina Giacinti.
