In a tough and ultimately frustrating game at the Mapei Stadium, Giacomo Raspadori's late equaliser for the hosts proved to be the decisive final moment in the contest.
Giallorossi captain Lorenzo Pellegrini gave his side the first half lead from the penalty spot - after Carles Perez had been hauled down - but that advantage was erased midway through the second half as Hamed Traore tapped in from close range.
It then briefly looked like Bruno Peres had won it for the visitors with a clinical finish inside the penalty area, only for Raspadori to show a striker's instinct inside the six-yard box.
Roma do not have long to reflect on this result - they face Ajax in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday evening.
Their next Serie A appointment is with Bologna at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
