Fienga outlines January approach

Roma chief executive Guido Fienga spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN ahead of Sunday’s match against Sampdoria, to outline the club’s ambitions for 2021.

Ahead of the game, which the Giallorossi eventually won 1-0, Fienga was asked about how the club would approach the January transfer window.

“In this transfer window, as with all of them, the overall strategy of the club is to make sustainable investments for the medium and long-term,” Fienga said.

“The owners have supported the club by backing the latest capital increase.

“Last January, there was some criticism because people said we had not done much in the window – and yet now we can see that we bought [Gonzalo] Villar, [Roger] Ibanez and Carles Perez in that window, three players that are now key elements of our project.

“Alongside our scouting team we will continue to work with that approach, while also keeping in mind the talent on offer in our Primavera and maintaining a focus on medium and long-term sustainability.”

Pushed on the January market, he added: “The coach has not made any specific requests. We have made some good progress, but we want to continue to improve.

“I will not discuss names, but Tiago Pinto and the scouting team are working on identifying potential options.”

The CEO was then asked for his overall ambitions for the new calendar year.

“I hope that 2021, especially for the fans, is much easier than 2020 and that we are able to steer the club towards more success,” Fienga said.

“The squad, as we see it, is already strong: if they are convinced of their talent then they will do well and it will become much easier for reinforcements to come in and settle in too.”
