Club CEO hails Primavera achievement

Club CEO Guido Fienga has praised Roma Women's Primavera side after they clinched the 2019-20 national title on Saturday.

Fabio Melillo's Under-19 side, who won all 17 of their league games before the season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, beat Juventus 2-1 in a special final in Tirrenia on Saturday afternoon.

Alice Corelli - one of a number of academy graduates to have made their first-team debuts in recent months - opened the scoring for the Giallorosse, with Maria Grazia Petrara's long-range strike on the half-hour mark ultimately proving decisive.

After losing last year's final on penalties against Inter Milan, this time Roma savoured success and clinched the national title.

“The Scudetto won by our girls has filled the whole club with pride and gives further prestige to our youth sector," Fienga said.

"We lost the final last year, but we were determined to bounce back and are now deserved champions.

"Congratulations to coach Fabio Melillo and all our players who contributed throughout the season.”

Corelli, Emma Severini and Serena Landa all started on Saturday - having all also made Serie A appearances for Roma Women over the last 12 months.

"Bringing the girls to this sort of stage is great - we are all delighted to deliver this trophy to the club," Melillo said in his post-match comments.

"Lots of the girls are now training regularly with the first team and are developing both physically and technically. Tough games like this will only aid their development even more.

"The new season starts next Sunday. The aim is to back this up - the club has brought through more fantastic players who have strengthened the squad, and we are ready to do well again next season."

Corelli, Rome-born and a Roma fan, will now continue her involvement with Betty Bavagnoli's senior squad.

"With my first team debut and now this Primavera title, it's been a huge start to the season for me," Corelli said.

"I hope this is the first of many trophies [at this club], we are all so happy."
