Fonseca: Great display but we keep improving

Paulo Fonseca praised his players following their 4-1 victory over Fiorentina on Friday night - acknowledging a great performance to close out the year.

Fonseca saw his side run out comfortable winners at what is traditionally a tough ground for the Giallorossi to go to, thanks to goals from Edin Dzeko, Aleksandar Kolarov, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Nicolo Zaniolo.

"I must say I'm very pleased with this performance," Fonseca said.

"It was a very important victory and we played well. Our preparations were good and we put everything we'd planned into practice. It's not easy to come here, especially considering they've had some good results against top teams like Inter, Juve and Atalanta, but we managed to produce a fantastic display this evening."

Maybe only thinking about fourth place is setting the bar too low?

"All that matters to me is the next game. I must say we've had a good first half of the season over the last few months, but at the end of the day, we still need to learn and improve because we always want to be winning games. All that counts now is the next match."

Which aspect of this team have you improved the most?

"I think there's still so much to improve. We could control the ball better and in certain situations this evening, we lost it when we shouldn't have. There are areas to improve, but the side has been making good progress. The players are confident and have bought into my ideas for the team, which is the most important thing for me.

What is Lorenzo Pellegrini's main attribute?

"He has so many. He's a very important player who always looks to find the right space at the right time. He has a wonderful ability to make the right decision in the final third."

This team possibly has the same qualities that your Shakhtar side had, without the host of Brazilian players that they had. How have you managed to get Roma playing in that style?

"The merit is down to the players for believing in our idea. It's not easy to have a team here in Italy with so much possession, but the side is gradually understanding how important it is to keep possession and always create passing lines. We're slowly changing the players' mindset."

You're now in the Champions League positions with a lead over the teams below you…

"Yes, but we have to keep our feet on the ground. Being fourth and winning today isn't reason for us to think everything is OK. We haven't even got to the end of the first half of the campaign and we need to strike the right balance."

Is it possible to improve this team during the January transfer window?

"As I've already said, the January transfer window isn't an easy one. The players would have to be better than the ones we already have and I don't think it'll be straightforward to find quality players who are ready to come in and play immediately."
