Fonseca: Pellegrini changed the game, Ibanez did well

Paulo Fonseca was satisfied with the efforts of his players, as they got back to action with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sampdoria.

Two spectacular goals from Edin Dzeko were required for the Giallorossi to turn things around at the Stadio Olimpico, as they played their first Serie A game in 115 games.

Here's what Fonseca had to say after the contest...

The team waited for the right moment, they didn’t get impatient. Were you pleased with the attitude they players showed?

“Yes. We can’t forget that this is our first game back. We went out there with the right attitude, we created two or three clear-cut chances – but then when we conceded the team lost their cool a little bit. We left space for Sampdoria to create a few openings, but in the second half we produced a different performance.”

You called on Lorenzo Pellegrini in the end, who brought Roma back into the game. Was it a bit of a risk leaving him out at the start?

“I didn’t have any other chance, he has not been fit and only managed three or four days of training. We couldn’t risk him from the start, but he came in and changed things and produced a great pass for Dzeko’s equaliser.”

Does the Europa League or Serie A give a better opportunity for Roma to qualify for next season’s Champions League?

“I have to say that we have two possible routes, but Atalanta are in a great spell of form so it won’t be easy – they are a great side. However, we have to keep fighting until the end of the season.

“We cannot afford to drop any points, but we believe we can do that. First of all we have to focus on our matches and what we need to do, otherwise things become too difficult. After that we will turn our focus to the Europa League, where will be a top side in Sevilla.”

Is Dzeko the best striker who have coached in your career?

“Yes. These two goals tonight show what a great player he is – finishes like that are something only the best forwards can do.”

You opted for Roger Ibanez in defence, which surprised some. What have you seen in him?

“My decision was based largely on training. Gianluca Mancini had an issue and has not trained in the last few days, while Roger had been doing really well. He had a good game, which he deserved. It’s not easy for a young player to make their debut for Roma.”

    How is Nicolo Zaniolo?

“He’s good, he’s recovering well. He’s started training with the Primavera and in a week or two he should be back training with the first team.”
