Andrea Belotti got both goals for the visitors - one in either half - as the Giallorossi were left feeling aggrieved at some questionable decisions from the officials throughout.
Paulo Fonseca's side had their chances - Salvatore Sirigu in the Torino goal made a number of vital saves - but were punished at crucial moments, with Belotti breaking the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.
In the second half Roma pushed forward but were thwarted in their attempts at an equaliser, while frequently being left perplexed at some of the decisions being made by the referee.
In the end it was VAR that had the final say, awarding a penalty to the Granata after Chris Smalling handled in the box.
Belotti made no mistake from the box, and Roma were left to rue a disappointing night.
