Roma 1-1 Cagliari: Frustration reigns in draw

Roma were held to a 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Sunday afternoon, as tensions ran high at the Stadio Olimpico.

Joao Pedro's early penalty was cancelled out by Luca Ceppitelli's own goal before half-time, in the decisive action of the match.

But there were plenty of further controversial moments, with referee Davide Massa at the heart of them.

The most notable moment came in the final stages of the 90 minutes, as Nikola Kalinic appeared to have put the ball in the back of the net for a dramatic late winner.

But the referee appeared to whistle for a while in the build-up, with VAR unable to review the decision and Roma players left fuming.

Their mood had not been helped by the decision to award Cagliari a penalty through VAR in the first half, as Gianluca Mancini was adjudged to have handballed inside his own box.

Tensions continued to run high as Roma players and staff continued to feel decisions were going against them, with coach Paulo Fonseca among those shown a red card for his protestations after the final whistle.

With the international break now taking place, Roma are next in action away to Sampdoria on October 20.
