Fonseca: My players have tremendous character

Read what Paulo Fonseca had to say after Roma's 4-0 victory against Udinese...

After being down to ten men for more than half of the match, Paulo Fonseca's squad showed character in their thumping 4-0 victory away to Udinese. Here is what the boss had to say after the win...

“We played well and had loads of chances, even playing a man light," Fonseca said. "The lads stuck together after [Federico] Fazio's red card and we deserved to win,” Paulo Fonseca commented after the match.

What did you think of Fazio's sending off and the way your players responded to it?

“We all battled together and tried to keep playing our game, even with 10 men. We scored three more goals and it might have been even more. I don't want to talk about the sending off. I think it's quite clear from the replay.”

Instead of defending, you kept on attacking and scored another three. What triggered that?

“My players have tremendous character. They realised it was a key moment in the match, that we needed to defend and at the same time threaten in attack. When you find yourself a man down you tend to sit back but we realised we could score more.”

How much work have you done with Javier Pastore on a psychological level? He seems to be enjoying his football again...

“It's mainly a question of fitness. He's fit and he produced a fine display today. He's getting his confidence back and with it he's finding his feet again.”

Will you consider using Gianluca Mancini in midfield even when your midfielders come back? He's impressed both in defence and in midfield.

“I agree - he's been a real revelation for me. He's doing really well in midfield. I'll have to think about what to do in the next game. We won't have Fazio so I'll have to decide whether to play Mancini at the back in or midfield. In any case, he's playing very well there.”

When will we see Alessandro Florenzi back in the starting line-up? How is he?

“He's fine. Florenzi is our captain and he's a fantastic footballer who works really hard. It's just simple team selection. He can play in lots of positions, on the left too.”
