Greggi excited to get Italy chance

Roma Women midfielder Giada Greggi admits she is hoping to make her Italy debut over the coming weeks, as she settles in quickly with the national team.

The 20-year-old midfielder received her first call-up for the Azzurre last month, for the upcoming games against Malta and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

While admitting that the call to represent her country was a dream come true, Greggi is hoping she gets a chance to impress during those two games.

“It’s a nice atmosphere here, all the girls and the coaches are helping me,” Greggi told Roma TV.

“I feel comfortable already. I hope to make my debut – I will do everything I can to make a contribution to the team.”

The selection for the national team caught Greggi a bit by surprise – although she was surrounded by her teammates when Roma coach Betty Bavagnoli passed on the good news.

“I did not expect to receive this call-up, and I was actually in a team meeting with the coach when I heard,” Greggi added.

“I was just speechless, there aren’t any words to describe how I felt in that moment. But the best thing was I was with all my teammates, who all hugged me and congratulated me.”

Speaking earlier in the week, Italy coach Milena Bertolini admitted that Greggi is a player that had long been on her radar.

“She is a player we’ve been following for a while,” Bertolini said. “When I was at Brescia I wanted to bring her to the club.

“She was just 16 and had made her debut in Serie A. She is still young but she has a lot of experience – and more than that she has quality, tenacity and energy.

“Giada is a bright talent, she’s played for all the Italy youth teams and during the first two games of the season she has played well.”
