Genoa 1-1 Roma: Late drama leaves Giallorossi deflated

Roma were denied a potentially massive three points on Sunday evening, in a frantic finish to a 1-1 with Genoa.

Stephan El Shaarawy's latest strike - with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game - appeared to have steered the Giallorossi to a vital victory, only for defender Cristian Romero to head home an equaliser for the hosts in the final minute of the 90.

In injury time there was somehow further drama too; Antonio Mirante saving Toni Sanabria's penalty to ensure Roma came away from the game with something to show for their efforts.

Given results elsewhere, however, the Giallorossi now face a battle over the final three games to qualify for next season's Champions League.

They face Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico next Sunday.

In a dramatic game that saw both sides create some decent openings, it was not until the 82nd minute that Roma finally broke the deadlock - as El Shaarawy steered home at the far post after anticipating Dzeko's flick-on.

Far from being the end of the drama, however, it was only the start. Romero - who had arguably squandered the best of his side's chances at the end of the first half - headed home from a corner in the dying moments, before Mirante brought down Sanabria inside the box to set up a decisive final moment.

But the goalkeeper made amends to deny Sanabria from the spot, and salvage a point.
