Chievo 0-3 Roma: Fast start propels side to victory

Roma got back to winning ways - and warmed up for the Champions League - with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chievo Verona on Friday evening.

The Giallorossi, playing early in view of Tuesday's last-16 tie with Porto in Europe, made life easy for themselves for once at the Stadio Bentegodi - as early goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Dzeko set the side on their way.

Aleksandar Kolarov then completed the scoring five minutes into the second half, wrapping up a valuable three points.

After the frustrations of recent weeks, coach Eusebio Di Francesco will have wanted a fast start in Verona - and he got that, as El Shaarawy got on the scoresheet after just nine minutes.

The forward's defence-splitting run was beautifully picked out, and he did brilliantly to run beyond the goalkeeper before chipping home his eighth league goal of the campaign.

Soon after it was Dzeko, captain for the night, who doubled the advantage - becoming the club's joint-eighth all-time leading goalscorer as he cut inside onto his left foot before finding the bottom corner with unerring accuracy.

Chievo then seemed to grow in confidence in the threat for the remainder of the first half - with goalkeeper Antonio Mirante responsible for a number of important saves. In the second half, however, Roma quickly re-asserted their dominance; with Kolarov's under-lapping run found expertly by Dzeko for the Serbian to wrap up the game.

In the end the scoreline could have been even more emphatic, had the woodwork not denied both Dzeko and El Shaarawy second goals.

The Giallorossi are at the Olimpico on Tuesday night to face the Portuguese champions. Their next Serie A game is also at home, as they host Bologna the following Monday.
