Roma hadn't previously lost in the league when the trio of Gervinho, Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah started up front. The Giallorossi had won two (Carpi and Fiorentina) and drawn one (at Hellas Verona) of the previous three games, scoring eight and conceding three in the process.
The defeat in Milan ended Roma's run of five consecutive wins, which had seen the Giallorossigo top for two straight weeks. Roma have strung together at least six victories on the spin 13 times in the past. Five of these sequences began after a loss.
Roma have conceded in each of their last eight league matches, letting in 11 from a total of13 since the start of the season. In the last nine campaigns, the Scudetto winners that conceded the most were Inter, twice with 34 in the goals against column.
The Giallorossi hadn't had a similar sequence since the 2012-2013 season, when they conceded in 10 consecutive matches under Zdenek Zeman. That particular run lasted form a 3-1 victory at Siena on Decemer 2 until the 3-1 loss at Sampdoria on February 10, before it ended with a 1-0 win over Juventus at the Olimpico, courtesy of a Francesco Totti thunderbolt.
Roma ended both top-of-the-table clashes away at Fiorentina and Inter a man light. In each game, the two players sent off - Mohamed Salah and Miralem Pjanic were dismissed for two bookable offences.
Roma's run of scoring in 21 consecutive league matches has come to an end. The sequence began with the 1-0 win at Cesena on March 22, taking in a total of 41 goals up to Roma's 3-1 victory at home to Udinese on October 28. The Giallorossi will have to wait before once again challenging the club record of finding the net in 27 straight games, a run stretching from a 1-1 draw with Lazio on October 23, 2005 right through to a 3-3 draw with Palermo on April 15, 2006 - 55 goals in total.
Rudi Garcia has only lost 22.7% of his matches on the road - a record only bettered by three Roma coaches in the club's history. Vincenzo Montella record stands at 16% (one loss from six away games), Alec Stock has 20% (one loss from 5 away games) and Laios Kovacs has 21.4% (three losses from 14 games).
Among the Giallorossi coaches to have taken charge of at least 40 away league games, Fabio Capello has the best record after Garcia (24.7%) followed by Luciano Spalletti (27.2%) and Carlo Mazzone (31.3%).
Roma will have to wait until the second half of the season to hope to secure their 50th league win over the team from Milan. They have 49 wins, 48 draws and 72 losses with 220 goals scored and 271 conceded.
Under Garcia, Roma have scored 61 goals on their travels in the league and conceded 40, at an average of 1.53 goals scored for every one conceded away, the best rate ahead of Capello’s 1.43 (127 scored and 89 conceded) and Montella’s 1.38 (11 scored and 8 conceded).
Radja Nainggolan made his 80th appearance for the Giallorossi and his 63rd in the league.
