Spalletti: We'll need the crowd against Fiorentina

The Giallorossi coach believes Roma will require a big turn-out at the Stadio Olimpico for their next league match against Fiorentina

Luciano Spalletti believes Roma will require a big turn-out at the Stadio Olimpico for their next league match against Fiorentina.

The Giallorossi coach explained to Roma Radio that the team are as important as one's family, calling on the supporters to show their love for the club in a big game like Friday's.

"The Fiorentina match will be tough and we'll need our fans behind us to give us the edge," revealed Spalletti. "The people who talk about how much they love Roma will have to show it, the club are important like one's family."

So you want a big turn-out at the stadium on Friday?

“We have to keep the following in mind: As I've said, Roma need to be on a par with one's family in terms of importance, everything else comes after that. If people don't come to watch the game on Friday, it might seem like the fans have priorities other than the team. I'm addressing those who stress their love for the club - who have it etched in their hearts and minds - that now's the time to show it."

Were the supporters also important at Empoli?

“Yes, that was a good showing against them. Empoli play good football and I think it was crucial that we had the fans behind us. It's massive when they make us feel like we're at home. I hope we see more of the same in our upcoming home games."

Do you agree that the Fiorentina match, while not yet crucial, will be important in the race for third place?

“Yes, it will be an important, tricky game because they're a great team who play lovely football. Of all the sides near the top, the Viola are without doubt those who have done the best to be up there. They have consolidated their strength as a team because, despite having lesser names than their rivals, they have done well to be where they are in the table."

How pleased are you with the team's response to your instructions in recent weeks?

“The biggest response I had came at Empoli where we made some potentially awkward decisions. The lads gave a massive response because we showed that our team are a pack of wolves, but there are other wolves who can help us off the pitch. The aim is to bring the lesser-known players in our squad up to the same level as the great names we have here."

How much potential does this side have?

“You always need room for improvement. We were almost flawless against Empoli, given that we controlled the match and also hung in there when we came under pressure. We afforded [Marco] Giampaolo's side - who usually have lots of efforts on goal - very few shots."

What were your first thoughts when you returned to Rome?

“I achieved a lot in my time here and the mark I left before my departure is hard to forget. Moving back to a place is always nice because you have great memories. There are other factors though. One of my children studies in Rome but even the other one who lives in America is very passionate about Roma and gets up at the crack of dawn to watch games."
