Despite eventually slipping to defeat in Madrid, Roma continued a run of not losing a game at half time that began well over three months ago. The last time the Giallorossi went in behind at the interval, considering all league and cup games, was Roma 0-2 Atalanta on 29 November 2015. Suffering a double reverse to Real Madrid means Roma have now lost four times this season after the scores were tied at the break, following away defeats to Juventus and Sampdoria.

Four Giallorossi players featured in all eight of Roma's Champions League matches this season: Kostas Manolas (also the first man to reach 35 appearances in 2015-16), Alessandro Florenzi, Lucas Digne and Wojciech Szczesny.

Roma's record after eight Champions League games this term reads one win, three draws and four defeats, with 11 goals for and 20 against. Last year the Giallorossi played 10 European fixtures in the Champions League and the Europa League, winning two, drawing four and losing four, with 12 goals scored and 20 conceded.

The tenth meeting between Real Madrid and Roma saw the Giallorossi bow out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the third time in their history, having previously been eliminated in the same round by Arsenal and Shakhtar Donetsk. Roma have contested seven Champions League knock-out ties in total, winning two – at the expense of Lyon and Real Madrid – and being knocked out on five occasions (twice in the quarter-finals). The Giallorossi’s record against Madrid now reads three wins (two of which have come at the Bernabeu), one draw and six defeats.

Tuesday night’s clash at the Bernabeu was the 80th time Roma have contested a Champions League match in their history. Counting the defeat to Real, Roma’s record in the competition stands at 26 wins, 23 draws and 31 defeats, with the Giallorossi scoring 98 and conceding 119 along the way.

After coming on to rapturous applause from the Bernabeu and indeed the opposition players, Francesco Totti wrote himself even further into the Giallorossi record books on Tuesday night by making his 97th appearance for the club in European competitions. It was also Totti’s 751st match for Roma.
