The 2015-16 season may have only finished just over a week ago but Roma are already hard at work preparing for the coming season.

Coach Luciano Spalletti has spoken to the media about sporting director Walter Sabatini and the club’s ongoing approach to the transfer market.

“We’re in a free world and the market is completely open – that’s part of the game,” he said.

“We need to work well in terms of negotiations, we need to tempt and encourage, we need to prepare for the future well and be ready to go in any direction. A new train departs every day and we need to be ready to jump aboard or change tickets.

“I will meet with the club, with [Walter] Sabatini, with [Mauro] Baldissoni, with [Alex] Zecca in the coming days – that’s normal. Regardless of what spin people want to put on it, all directors meet with coaches and players.

"Players need to be listened to because they all have their own needs and all want to try to serve their own interests, as is right.

“Sabatini knows what he needs to do – he’s not the type of person who can be convinced. Despite what I’ve read and what’s been said, I’ve always thought he’s been well intentioned towards Roma. I’m sure he’ll stay. He puts real feeling and commitment into what he does. That shows it’s close to his heart and when that’s the case you carry on.

“In recent years our director has done well with various players. If you find yourself with no ideas or intent everything is much harder. After that you need to take action, because although knowledge is important actions are even more so, because if you don’t use your knowledge you don’t go anywhere.”
