AS Roma can announce that new signing Mario Rui will wear the No. 22 shirt next season.
The Portuguese left-back has opted for 22 at Roma after wearing No. 21 and No. 29 during his time at Empoli.
Prior to that he wore the traditional left-back No. 3 at both Gubbio and Spezia - and No. 21 at Fatima, the Portuguese club where he made his professional debut.
Mario Rui, who racked up 70 Serie A appearances for Empoli over the last two seasons, is the latest new face at the club following the arrivals of Gerson and Alisson.
In previous weeks permanent deals were also secured for on-loan players Antonio Rudiger, Stephan El Shaarawy, Norbert Gyomber, Nura and Sadiq Umar.
Twenty-two is a number that has often been seen on the back of Roma goalkeeper jerseys since the introduction of squad numbers in 1995-96. It was chosen by Andrea Campagnolo in 1996-97 and 1998-99, Francesco Antonioli in 1999-2000, Cristiano Lupatelli in 2000-01 and Ivan Pelizzoli from 2002 to 2005.
More recently the number belonged to defender Max Tonetto between 2006 and 2010, and then a trio of strikers: Marco Borriello from 2010 to January 2012, Mattia Destro from 2012 to January 2015, and Stephan El Shaarawy in the second half of last term.
El Shaarawy has opted to take the No. 92 shirt for the 2016-17 campaign.
