Euro 2016: How Giallorossi players have fared so far

DDR

With the first round of matches in the books, we take a look at how Roma players have done so far - and what challenges lie ahead

Portugal’s draw with Iceland on Tuesday evening marked the end of the first matchday of Euro 2016 – with seven Roma players involved in the tournament.

Here we take a look at their exploits so far, and the challenges that still await over the remainder of the group stage.

The first Giallorossi player to have a fixture was full-back Lucas Digne, with hosts France opening the tournament with a 2-1 win over Roma on 10 June. However, the defender did not play a part in the contest for Didier Deschamps’ side.

That was also the case for another Roma defender, Norbert Gyomber, who was on the bench for Slovakia as they were beaten 2-1 by Wales.

June 12 saw Wojciech Szczesny become the first Roma player to take the pitch in the tournament, as he played all 90 minutes and kept a valuable clean sheet as Poland beat Northern Ireland 1-0 to kick off their campaign.

The next day saw more Giallorossi interest, as both Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan started in the mouth-watering Group E opener between Italy and Belgium. Both players had their moments before being withdrawn by their coaches before the full-time whistle, as the Azzurri ultimately ran out 2-0 winners.

Roma pair Stephan El Shaarawy and Alessandro Florenzi both watched the contest from the bench.

Today, 15 June, sees the start of the second matchday of the tournament – with Gyomber and Digne potentially in action for Slovakia and France respectively.
