After making a surprise start in the centre of midfield for Sunday’s 3-2 friendly win over Terek Grozny, Emerson Palmieri declared himself willing to play in any position to help the team.
The Brazilian – who is more commonly seen on the flanks – stressed that the team was more important than any individual and that his job is simply to contribute to the overall performance.
“I’m happy to help the team from any position,” began Emerson, speaking after the final whistle. “For me the most important thing is to help the team. Even though I was signed as a left-back, I have no problem with playing on the right or in central midfield.”
We saw Luciano Spalletti giving you instructions throughout the game today. How is your relationship with him?
“He’s always looking to help us and pass on his experience. We have to do what he wants.”
How would you rate the team’s progression ahead of the new season?
“We’re moving along well. I’m really tired now but that’s normal because the first week is always the toughest. We need to keep working hard so we’re in good shape when the Champions League playoff comes around.”
How was Gerson got on over the past week or so?
“He works hard and wants to learn so I’m helping him as much as I can. He looks freer and freer in every training session. He’s a young lad so he’s not going to take long to settle in.”
What impression has fellow Brazilian Alisson made on you?
“I didn’t know him before he joined us – I’d seen him play on TV but I’d never met him in the flesh. He’s a great guy and a top goalkeeper. He’s got everything you need to do well.”
How have the new defenders slotted in?
“You can see that they’re quality players and they’ve shown that today. They add to what was already a very good side.”
What’s the objective for the season ahead?
“We need to play every game as if it were a final. If the team does well then I’m happy. I want to help the team and the coach.”
