Luciano Spalletti's pre-Austria Wien press conference in full

Spalletti

See what the boss had to say in his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday evening's Europa League meeting with Austria Wien...

The coach began, as usual, by delivering a medical update - confirming that Antonio Rudiger and Nura Abdullahi are still recovering from long-term problems, while Moustapha Seck is sidelined with a knock picked up in training this week.

Kevin Strootman could return after missing the trip to Naples, but both he and Kostas Manolas will be evaluated before kick-off as their situation will be closely monitored.

Roma did well to shut out Mauro Icardi and Manolo Gabbiadini in the last two games. Have you found the right set-up?

"The whole team has shown good balance and improved attitude and team-work in the last few outings. As a unit, we did well to get men behind the ball against Napoli and not leave gaps in midfield. The most important thing is to play as a team."

What did you take from the Napoli game and where do you think the team can improve?

"I've taken everything from it, including where we can get better. This is how you set yourself targets in your growth. We'll probably have to improve our ability at taking the chances that fall to us. We mustn't wait or hope for something to happen but grab the chances as they crop up. We could have done better in that respect. We won, we picked up an important result but we didn't exploit certain things as we could have."

Will Gerson play tomorrow? Do you know his best position yet?

"We should keep in mind how young he is. He's a talented lad with obvious ability that should be allowed to flourish. As a player grows, their positions can alter slightly. He's got quick feet and technical quality, so he could play just in front of the opposition defence, although that depends on other players who can give him time on the ball. He's not super-fast across the ground.

"We need to see if he can buy himself time to bring his attributes to the fore. If you play him five metres further back, he might find he has more space to play and fewer bodies around him. I could even play him in front of our defence and he could show his qualities there as well. You need to take into account physical presence and consistency when deciding where to play someone. He'll tell me himself with his performances and results. He's playing tomorrow."

How is Radja Nainggolan and where is Thomas Vermaelen on his return to fitness?

"Radja has improved, he's doing well. He put in a good performance against Napoli. He has a problem in that we're used to seeing him as our Superman on the pitch, getting to every ball, doing everything, developing the game in the manner we want and helping out his team-mates. He's got a few issues at the moment but in general he's OK. Vermaelen needs a fitness test. The type of inflammation he has can only be tested at full intensity, so let's wait and see."

Do you fear a drop in concentration after the Napoli result or has the team reached the psychological level to cope with both competitions?

"You find out the character of a man when you discover what makes him satisfied. If a good win makes you feel peaceful and satisfied, then you don't have the right character and everything will be more difficult. We don't step back from the level we've reached; we start again from there. Anyone who makes a backward step is in trouble. It will be difficult to go higher but this is our path and we have to go down it."

Will Francesco Totti play tomorrow as well?

"Totti has scored 99 goals with me as coach. I really want him to make it to 100, no one would be as pleased as me. Tomorrow will also be his 100th game in European competitions. Francesco Totti will play because we believe he can be decisive for us. He's playing."

The Austria Vienna coach said that he's relying on Roma to underestimate his lot. Is that a possibility?

"They will be a tricky side to face. They've got [Olarenwaju] Kayode up top, who is rapid, causes problems and runs all game. They have [Ismael] Tajouri, who has scored five goals and has a sweet left foot. He doesn't play that often, so whoever takes his spot has to be equally good. They have the same number of points as we do. What are we talking about here? We need another good performance and another win. I will set up my team in order to get the victory. I don't give hand-outs, I won't try and please someone who doesn't deserve it. This approach will only lead to defeat. I'm convinced we'll put in a good performance; yesterday the players were in great shape, they had the right focus."
