Roma’s next Europa League opponents, Villarreal, will return to competitive action following the Christmas break on Wednesday - as they face Real Sociedad in the last-16 of the Copa del Rey.
The Giallorossi will take on the Spanish outfit in the Round of 32 of the Europa League, with the tie to be played on 16 and 23 February.
Fran Escriba’s side made their last appearance of 2016 in the Copa del Rey, securing a 1-1 draw at home against Toledo in the Round of 32. Villarreal won through 4-1 on aggregate following a 3-0 win at Toledo in the first leg.
Villarreal were in impressive form throughout December, racking up two wins and a draw in the league as well as securing safe passage in the cup.
Escriba’s men kicked off the month with a 0-0 stalemate away at Leganes, but followed this up with a 3-0 home win over Atletico Madrid on December and a 3-1 victory at Sporting Gijon six days later.
Villarreal currently sit fourth in the league table, eight points behind leaders Real Madrid.
Also in December, Villarreal also secured a win in the final game of the Europa League group stages, beating Steaua Bucharest 2-1 at El Madrigal. The result ensured the Spanish outfit finished second in Group L, behind Turkish side Osmanlıspor.
