Barrier alternatives to be explored after positive Ministry meeting

Italy's Minister of the Interior and Minister for Sport have asked police to look into alternative safety arrangements at the Stadio Olimpico following a meeting on Wednesday, potentially bringing an end to the barriers at the ground.

On Tuesday morning, Minister of the Interior Marco Minniti chaired a meeting called by Minister for Sport Luca Lotti at the Palazzo del Viminale, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito and Roma's chief executive Umberto Gandini and general manager Mauro Baldissoni in attendance.

The focus of the meeting was the issue of the barriers in the stands behind the goals in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The barriers were installed as an extraordinary measure in June 2015 and have generated positive results in terms of safety since then, albeit while proving unpopular and invasive with both clubs' supporters.

Based on this, the Minister of the Interior Marco Minniti issued the Chief of Police and Director General of Public Safety Franco Gabrielli with a mandate to formulate an alternative strategy to the barriers within a reasonable timeframe - to ensure that sporting events can be enjoyed to the fullest whilst maintaining public safety.
