Five Things We Learned: Rampant Roma score four for third time in two weeks

TOP

The numbers all added up for the Giallorossi on Sunday - and our columnist takes a look at the key lessons learned from the 4-1 win over Torino

Goals from Edin Dzeko, Mohamed Salah, Leandro Paredes and Radja Nainggolan wrapped things up for Roma - continuing a scintillating recent run that also saw them notch four against Villarreal and Fiorentina over the last two weeks.

Brilliant week capped off in style

Roma rounded off a fantastic week, that was punctuated by their sizzling 4-0 Europa League win over Villarreal, in resounding style by defeating a strong Torino side 4-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Having lost to Sinisa Mihajlovic's men 3-1 earlier in the season, Roma were right on the ball from the outset, making sure a repeat of that result was never on the cards.

“The lads did well tonight because after the great win against Villarreal there was a risk that our tempo would drop off and that would have played into Torino’s hands," Spalletti said. "As it happened we looked good out there, pressing from the off and showing what we’re about.

"We want to have great evenings like this with our fans – we want to score goals and win football matches.”

Squad depth shines brightly

The strength in depth of this Roma team is continuing to be a huge positive throughout the campaign. This was indeed something that was highlighted when Mohamed Salah went away to the AFCON and when suspensions hit earlier this month. And against Torino this was no different, with the ever-improving Leandro Paredes and Juan Jesus, in particular, stepping up and showing their worth.

"We made four changes from the Villarreal match and that shows that our squad is in good shape and everyone wants to show that they’re proper players," explained Spalletti on the topic.

The way Spalletti's been able to keep all the members of his squad so happy and get them pulling all in the same direction is something he undoubtedly deserves credit for.

Moreover, the way the club has assembled such a flexible group of players for Spalletti to work with also warrants praise.

Paredes exudes class again

Of those aforementioned changes, Paredes especially put in a quality shift, as his exquisite passing qualities and ability to dictate the tempo of Roma's attacking moves proved vital. The usual calmness and composure he exhibits when in possession made him a joy to watch, in a match where he yet again remained largely unfazed by any fierce opposition pressure.

Paredes capped off his influential performance by scoring a blistering half volley on 65 minutes, a strike which left Joe Hart with absolutely no chance and was quite possibly one of the goals of the season so far.

A positive Paredes interestingly spoke after the contest on the importance of the win and how he needs to keep knuckling down and fighting for a place in the highly competitive Roma midfield.

“We had to react today because our rivals had all won," he said. "We knew we couldn’t afford to slip up. Luckily we’ve got the win and that’s the most important thing.

"I still need to get better. I know I have two team-mates in my position [Strootman and De Rossi] who are doing very well so I hope to match up to them.”

Record-breaking Dzeko can't stop scoring

Edin Dzeko crucially kept up his remarkable scoring run, with him was once again serving as a vital catalyst in the Giallorossi's smashing victory. His well taken strike on 10 minutes, not only got his team off to a perfect start, but also fittingly propelled him into the record books, seeing him become the first ever Roma player to score in eight consecutive matches.

Now on 19 Serie A goals this season and atop the goalscoring charts, Dzeko's certainly silencing any previous critics in emphatic fashion.

Defensive solidity continues to shine through

Facing off against one of the league's deadliest marksman in Andrea Belotti is never an easy task, but Roma's defence did a super job of limiting his influence.

Roma’s three central defenders of Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio and Jesus used a combination of strength and intelligence, plus their excellent understanding, to ensure he endured a very tough night at the office. They hardly gave Belotti a moment's peace to operate in, applying heavy pressure and imposing themselves physically on him in duels both on the ground and in the air.

Despite the resting of Antonio Rudiger, who was replaced by Juan Jesus, this was indeed another apt illustration of what a formidable backline Roma have.
