Spalletti: Two wins needed to fend off Napoli

SPAL

Coach Luciano Spalletti believes Roma have to treat their final two games of the season like play-off ties, as they bid to finish second in Serie A and qualify for next season's Champions League.

The Giallorossi are guaranteed a spot in the preliminary rounds of Europe's premier competition next season, but two victories - starting with Saturday against Chievo Verona - would guarantee them a spot in the group stage.

And Spalletti is eager for his side to retain their focus and go out and grasp that opportunity.

“The games against Chievo and Genoa are re-runs of the Champions League play-off against Porto," Spalletti said at his pre-match press conference. "We’re playing those two legs again just against different teams.

"Juventus will win the league: they’ve been the best side, they’ve set the pace, they’ve stepped up in every game and they deserve it. That doesn’t change anything for us – we just need to win these two matches."

On the prospect of finishing second, he added: "We want to be playing in the best football competition there is – it’s a wonderful competition. We’ve given ourselves the chance to play it next season, but we’ll be up against some very tough opposition.”

Spalletti was asked whether there was a risk of the squad's focus slipping in the wake of a victory over the league leaders.

“As far as I can see it, no," he said. "The risk is that we come up against a good side that causes us problems. Chievo have shown that they’re capable of making it difficult for the bigger teams in the league this season.

"They have a very clear identity and they pursue that through a brand of football which combines pace with great quality. That’s the risk. I’ve told the players that we need to win every game.

"As far as I’m concerned, we have two games left to win if we’re going to finish ahead of Napoli.”
