eSports: exclusive ‘Poacher’ interview ahead of the VS Gaming Festival in South Africa

As he prepares to compete in the VS Gaming Festival, the biggest football eSports event in Africa, Sam ‘Poacher’ Carmody reflects on his past events and looks toward his future goals in an exclusive interview…

How has your life been different since becoming one of AS Roma’s three eSports players?

“When I signed, I decided to leave school and make it a priority to play FIFA full-time. That is crazy in itself since it’s been a dream of mine to do that ever since I started playing competitively. I’ve also attended multiple events around the world since February when I signed. I’ve had many great experiences doing this and I’ve met lots of people I never thought I would meet.”

You’ve competed in Russia, Spain, Germany and other places around the world, but what’s been your proudest moment as a pro player thus far?

“I believe I haven’t had a ‘proud’ moment yet at an event since signing with Roma. Each year, FIFA suits different play styles for different players, and unfortunately this year wasn’t as suited to my style as last year’s version was. Last year was attack before defense, while this year it is more about defense before attack. I’ve found it difficult to adapt this year, but it will be interesting to see how the game changes going into FIFA 18.”

What is the biggest challenge of being an eSports athlete?

“The biggest challenge of being an eSports athlete is trying to maintain a sleep and practice schedule that still works when events come around.”

How does it feel to face the likes of PSG, Valencia, Ajax and Lyon on the virtual pitch?

“For eSports players to be able to represent clubs and play each other is unbelievable. When football clubs started getting involved with FIFA eSports, I saw the potential, and it’s an honour to be a part of the development and progress of this trend.”

Has signing for Roma put any unnecessary pressure on your performance or do you use it as confidence?

“Of course there’s always going to be a little pressure representing a club as big as Roma, but for me, I feel as if it doesn’t affect my gameplay and therefore doesn’t affect my performance.”

What has been your favourite tournament to compete in as a member of AS Roma and why?

“The event I attended in Russia is possibly the best event I’ve been to so far. They made the event extremely entertaining to watch and had a great atmosphere with all of the Russian supporters.”

You’re heading down to South Africa to compete in the biggest video game festival on the continent – what are your thoughts ahead of this massive event?

“I don’t know any of the other players competing thus far, but If I stay relaxed and focused I believe I can go far in the tournament.”

What’s your strategy heading into an event in such an unfamiliar location – does it make playing more difficult for you?

“Stick to the game plan and see what happens and I guess we’ll see how fast I can adapt to the environment.”

What do you want to say to the AS Roma fans who have been supporting you throughout your journey with the club?

“Thanks for all of the support since I signed. It has been unbelievable so far and one day I’ll hopefully bring a title home.”

What are your goals for next season and beyond?

“Next year, my goal is to win an event and place in the Top 16 in every single event I enter.”
