Dzeko: These goals show I'm still getting better

AIGM

Edin Dzeko admitted he felt Roma could have come away with all three points on Wednesday, as the Giallorossi drew 3-3 with Chelsea in the Champions League.

Dzeko – who had never previously scored against the Premier League champions – scored twice in the second half as Roma came back from an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead, although Eden Hazard’s header ensured the points were ultimately shared.

“It’s been a splendid evening, even though we could have won this,” Dzeko said. “A point is positive for us, plus we put on an incredible display, all of us from the get-go.

“It’s a shame we conceded the goals we did. We need to work harder, but we did well today.

“Perhaps yes, [we can work on cutting out mistakes]. But they’re a strong team – they basically scored three goals from three opportunities. Our mentality was the right one – from the first minute we played our game against Chelsea, who are a great side. I’m very happy.”

Dzeko’s first goal – a brilliantly taken first-time volley – is surely destined to be replayed countless times down the years. The striker credited Italian football with improving his skillset.

“I said yesterday that Italian football has given me a great deal,” he noted. “You can see that today because when I was at Manchester City, I never scored against Chelsea. I scored today and did well.

“It’s still early [in the group]. We still have three important games left to play. It’s a crucial point for us. Now our focus switches back to Serie A, then we’ll think about the Champions League again.”
