Alisson: Success is our aim for 2018

Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker is eager to help the team make huge strides in 2018, as he reflected on performances so far in his first season as the club’s No. 1.

Alisson, speaking in a live Facebook interview on Wednesday, revealed he was always confident he would make an immediate impact in the Giallorossi goal, despite having spent much of his first season at the club as a back-up.

Since becoming the starter this season, however, the Brazil international has caught the eye with a number of impressive performances.

"Yes, I was expecting it. I’ve always been confident in my ability,” Alisson said. “When I wasn’t playing so much last year, I worked very hard to ensure I was ready and in good shape when the time came.

“I was already ready when I joined Roma and I believe that if I had played regularly from the moment I came here, I would have played like this then too.

“I have a lot of confidence in what I do and I knew it was going to be a good year. I want to keep this up and continue doing well for Roma."

Increasingly a cornerstone of the side, Alisson is now hoping to help Eusebio Di Francesco’s squad push on in the New Year and reach new heights.

"The aim for 2018 is to make this team successful. I want to win every match I play – I’m quite ambitious!" he said.

"I would give [the season so far] quite a positive rating. In terms of the Champions League it’s been very good, because we finished top of the group and produced some great performances against top teams. We showed what we can do.

“We’ve done well in the league but not well enough to be up at the top. I think we need to raise our game and give that little bit extra on the pitch."

The New Year begins with an important home game against Atalanta on Saturday.

"We’re expecting a difficult game,” he noted. “We showed how good we are when we went to their place – we wanted to go there and get the win and that’s what we did. Atalanta have done very well in recent years and they’ve beaten some of the top teams in Serie A so that shows how good they are.

“That said, we’re playing at home so we need to turn up. We’ll play our own game and make sure our will to win is always there."
