Florenzi: We need to take the game by the scruff of the neck

FLOR

Alessandro Florenzi underlined the importance of Tuesday's Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk - calling it 'one of the most important games' he will play in during his career to date.

The full-back sat alongside coach Eusebio Di Francesco during Monday's pre-match press conference at Trigoria, where he spoke about what he believes will be the keys to overturning the Giallorossi's 2-1 first leg deficit.

"It will be important to manage our energy over the course of the 90 minutes, but we need to try and play our game and that’s about maintaining a lightning-quick tempo," Florenzi said. "We need to seize the game by the scruff of the neck.

"If we get a goal we can’t start thinking that we’ve done it – we need to keep going for the whole game.

"It’s definitely an important match which means a lot both to us guys and to Roma. It would be our fourth quarter-final as a club so we want to start well and do our best."

What’s the reason for the discrepancy in Roma’s home form between Serie A and the Champions League?

"We want to maintain our home form in the Champions League. We’ve been lacking something in the league but we did well against Torino last time out. We want to qualify but we need to be aware of their qualities."

What’s the situation with your contract talks?

"I don’t think now is the right time to speak about my contract extension. I like to think in the present and for me that means focusing on tomorrow’s game. It’s one of the most important matches I’ve played in and the only thing we can do is give 100%. We know how much it means to us and to the fans."

You’ve really put the running in in your last few matches…

"Based on the data we receive from our coaches each week, I’ve been producing some good performances from a fitness perspective in recent weeks. I feel good and I want to continue that trend tomorrow."

You’ve been established in the full-back position for a few years now. Do you feel that full-back is your position or have you had to adapt?

"Quite simply, I am happy to do whatever the coach asks. I enjoy playing at full-back, but I’ve always said that the position I play in is not an issue for me. The most important thing is to go out there and give 100% for the club."

Are you satisfied with your season so far?

"I think I can improve. I’m the type of person who never rests on their laurels and wants to keep improving. You never stop learning in football or life in general."
