Defrel ready to make his contribution as campaign hits crunch time

DEF

Gregoire Defrel hopes his injury issues are in the past as he prepares for a decisive end to the season with Roma.

The Giallorossi forward, a summer arrival from Sassuolo, has seen his first season in the Italian capital disrupted by a couple of injury issues – setbacks that mean he has scored just one goal for Eusebio Di Francesco’s side so far.

But, after an international break to work on his fitness, the Frenchman is hopeful that he is rediscovering his form just in time to help his teammates during a crucial period of the campaign.

“I’m feeling much better, I am back in the group now and everything’s looking positive,” Defrel told the club’s matchday programme.

“Unfortunately the physical issues I have had have had an effect this season, I haven’t been able to train consistently or get myself in the best possible shape. I’m working hard to try and get back to my best.

Defrel, who worked alongside Di Francesco at Sassuolo before both moved to Roma last summer, believes his coach retains huge faith in his ability.

“We speak a lot and he still has confidence in me,” Defrel added. “Di Francesco knows me well, we’ve worked together for the last three years. He knows I’m not at my best right now, but he also knows that I can do much more.

“I don’t think he has changed much [from Sassuolo], which I think is a very positive thing. I am convinced he is doing a great job and he is showing that so far.”

With Roma heading into some big matches both domestically and in Europe, Defrel is eager to get the chance to play his part.

“Our aim in the league is to finish in the Champions League places – third place – ahead of Lazio,” he said.

“In the Champions League I think there are few people who think we have a chance in the quarters, but we are ready for two big games against Barcelona and want to put in two top performances. Getting through would be incredible...

“Personally, I want to score a few more goals, play more regularly while staying fit and sharp. I’m working towards this, and hope I can do well whenever the boss calls on me.”
