Indeed, it was Dzeko who had three glorious chances in the closing stages to clinch the game. First he saw a header well saved by Thomas Strakosha, before moments later another towering effort rebounded away off the crossbar.
Then, in the final attacking moment of the match, the striker lashed a powerful long-range drive just inches wide of Strakosha's near post.
In the first half, meanwhile, it was Peres who could not quite convert the game's best chance - his low drive hitting the bottom of the post, after he was played in beautifully by Radja Nainggolan.
Lazio had their chances during the 90 minutes but, in the end, Simone Inzaghi's side celebrated as the final whistle blew and they clinched a draw.
Di Francesco made just one change from the side that beat Barcelona so memorably on Tuesday, with Bruno Peres coming in for Alessandro Florenzi.
Once again Radja Nainggolan and Patrik Schick supported Edin Dzeko in attack, as the Giallorossi continued with an amended 3-4-3 formation.

81' - Kolarov goes for goal from the resulting free-kick, but curls his attempt over the bar.
84' - El Shaarawy makes a vital covering challenge to prevent Marusic scoring from close range!
85' - Dangerous cross from Florenzi, El Shaarawy goes for it at the far post but cannot touch it home!
90' - SAVE! Cengiz plays in a great cross for Dzeko - the striker's header is on target but Strakosha makes an important stop!
90'+1 - BAR! DZEKO HITS THE BAR! Another towering header, but this time the woodwork keeps it out!
