Mourinho: "We dominated. Their late goal was unfair on us"

Jose Mourinho gave his thoughts on Roma’s performance after his side’s away tie against Salzburg.

Roma had three big chances and at this level you’ve got to take what you can get, because it can lead to the situation Roma find themselves in. That’s football, isn’t it?

“These things can happen and that’s what transpired tonight. You’re right, though – we dominated the game and I think we were always in control of the match. Rui Patricio didn’t have much to do. We missed some gilt-edged chances. The referee didn’t see a stonewall penalty in the first half. We were unlucky with the referee being changed late in the day – the official originally assigned to the match didn’t take charge of it in the end. To top it off we conceded a last-minute goal which feels really unfair. But as you said, that’s football, and there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Roma put in a great performance against Napoli yet came away empty-handed, and it was the same again today. However, it’s clear that the team is on the up.

“We just need to convert chances. If you don’t make the most of your opportunities you can end up paying a big price. We’re aware of what we’re capable of and our limitations. When my team gives all that they’re capable of I can’t have any complaints.”

What’s the latest on Paulo Dybala’s injury?

“I’m not sure. All I know is that he deemed him not able to continue for the second half. I can’t tell you if he’s injured, or whether he was running the risk of picking up an injury, or whether we took him off just to play it safe. We reacted to Dybala’s absence by moving Stephan El Shaarawy further forward to provide our attack with some zest. We then took off Tammy Abraham and put on Andrea Belotti. However after conceding the goal it was too late to make any further alterations.”
