Interview: Lazaro excited to join Roma project

Having spent time at Pink Bari and Fiorentina over the last 18 months the Spanish forward is no stranger to Italian football - and is excited to see what the future now holds for her in the Italian capital.

"I chose Roma because it’s a club with a great history behind it," Lazaro said. "It's an historic club with an ambitious plan for the future.

"I think we can have a good season, we can compete in the league. The squad has a lot of quality."

A familiar foe to Betty Bavagnoli's side, Lazaro will enhance the attacking options for the team - capable as she is of playing anywhere across the frontline.

“I’ve faced Roma three times I think, those meetings gave me a positive impression," she noted.

"It’s a well-built squad, the girls are all very good players, a lot of them are internationals too. It’s a squad that has been in construction for two years, with a lot of good players from different places.

"The team always wants the ball – I come from Spain so I like that way of playing, I think it will suit me well."

She added: "I’m a forward that loves to get on the ball. I think I’m best in one-on-one situations. I don’t have a fixed position, I’m comfortable playing anywhere across the frontline."

With the 2019-20 campaign having been cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic, Lazaro believes players will be more motivated than ever to ensure women's football in Italy continues to improve and develop.

"I’m expecting a competitive season, every season women’s football gets better," she said.

"I think it’s going to be a very hard-fought league campaign. We will have to see how everything restarts following Covid-19, but the aim of all the players is to get back into action and that’s a positive thing.

"After being stopped for so long it will great to get back out on the pitch, to get back into our routine. I’ve missed being in the dressing room, being with my teammates, everything about it all. I can’t wait to get started again.”
