Serie A Lowdown: Napoli

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to the San Paolo to take on Napoli (kick-off: 20:45 CET), we put the spotlight on Roma’s Matchday 9 hosts.

NAPOLI

League position: 6th
Form: L W W L W
Serie A top-scorer: Hirving Lozano (4)
Last time out in Serie A: Napoli 1-3 AC Milan

Their season so far: Everything the reigning Coppa Italia champions have done to date so far in 2020-21 will be completely overshadowed by the death of the legendary Diego Maradona, who lifted the club from the basement of Serie A to their only two Scudetti in the club’s history.

Maradona played his best football across a seven-year spell at the San Paolo, which this week saw mourners flock to the stadium that will soon bear the iconic Argentine’s name.

It’s desperately sad fans will not be in attendance to pay homage to the man that once ruled the city but - like the stunning flare display outside the ground on Thursday as Napoli beat HNK Rijeka in the Europa League - there will still be tributes paid to the Partenopei’s former No. 10.

The win over Rijeka ended a run of three home defeats in all competitions for this weekend’s hosts, but Gennaro Gattuso’s men have lost their last two on home soil in the league.

That will be a major concern for Gattuso to address at the start of an - so far - all or nothing campaign where they are yet to draw a game.

Milan were the latest side to see off Napoli on their own turf in the league - a game that saw Tiemoue Bakayoko pick up two yellow cards and a red to leave him suspended for the visit of the Giallorossi.

One of Diego Demme, Eljif Elmas or Piotr Zielinski should start in Bakayoko’s place, while record signing Victor Osimhen is still injured, as are Elseid Hysaj and Amir Rrahmani.

What they've said:

“Diego wasn’t the man who won the Scudetto, he was the best player in the world who wore the Napoli jersey, represented this city and made a whole generation dream when the trophies all went to the northern clubs.

"We’ve won eight of our last 11 games, but if people think we are Galacticos or like Barcelona, they are badly wrong. What I want to see is hunger, the desire to help each other out and work together.” - Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso
