International: Greggi receives first Italy call-up

Giada Greggi has received her first call-up for the Italian national team, as one of four Roma representatives in the latest squad.

Greggi, 20, joins club teammates Elisa Bartoli, Manuela Giugliano and Annamaria Serturini in the Azzurre squad for the upcoming matches against Malta and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

However, midfielder Agnese Bonfantini misses out this time - she has been named in the Under-23 squad.

Italy face Malta on October 4 in Ta'Qali, before heading to Palermo to host Bosnia & Herzegovina on October 8.

Roma Women coach Betty Bavagnoli announced Greggi’s selection in front of her teammates.

“We must never forget what I always say: that we are a group chasing a common goal,” Bavagnoli said.

“And every time we work towards that goal, it is natural that individuals will begin to receive personal recognition too. For that reason I am delighted to say congratulations to Giada Greggi, who has been called up by Italy for the first time.”

Only last week Greggi admitted that a first senior international call-up was a major ambition for her – having represented her country at Under-15, U-17 and U-19 level.

“My aims are to keep improving, both technically and tactically, and to give everything towards helping the team qualify for the Champions League,” she told Roma TV.

"Personally, I would really like to earn an international call-up – because to represent your country is a huge honour.”

Greggi subsequently took to Twitter to give her reaction to the news.

"This is a special moment for me," she said.

"I have already received so many messages of congratulations, and I'll take that with me on this great new adventure.

"Thank you to the fans, the Roma family and all those who have believed in me."
