Sixteen seasons later, a blue kit returns to the fore for the Giallorossi - with the 2019-20 third kit taking inspiration from the past.
Officially unveiled on Wednesday, the Nike kit takes inspiration from the very first blue kit the club ever had - a kit the club in fact only ever wore once.
That was on 18 May 1992, when the third kit for that season was worn in the second leg of the club's Cup Winners' Cup tie against Monaco.
Adidas were the shirt-makers on that occasion, crafting a shirt that carried a number of elements made famous by national teams during the 1990 World Cup and 1992 European Championships. With blue dominating, the yellow and red accents across the shoulders, collar and cuffs made for a striking kit that quickly gained a strong following.
The game itself did not turn out as hoped - Monaco winning 1-0 to eliminate the Giallorossi from the competition - but the shirt nevertheless came to be beloved by many fans.
It became something of a pub quiz answer - with the Giallorossi not wearing a shirt that was not either white or red until 1996, when a green kit was donned for the meeting with Slavia Prague in the UEFA Cup.
Blue, in fact, did not return to become a dominant colour on a Roma kit until the 2000-01 season - a campaign where Roma would famously win the Serie A title.
That season Kappa introduced a striking blue design, with orange accents.
That kit had a bit more use than its predecessor - being worn on three occasions (Bari 1-4 Roma, Hamburg 0-3 Roma, Vicenza 0-2 Roma).
Kappa opted to stick with the colour scheme for the following campaign, changing some of the design elements but retaining the same overall idea.
After black made a return the following season, in 2003-04 the blue third kit was announced once again - this time through Diadora.
Orange remained the predominant accent colour, although a little bit of red was also included.
The shirt made a number of appearances - even being worn during a few home games during the club's UEFA Cup campaign that season.
Sixteen seasons later, once again the Olimpico will be the hosting ground as Roma wear a blue kit again.
Istanbul Basaksehir are the visitors on Thursday, as the Giallorossi will turn out in a blue kit for the 18th time in the club's history - and the first in this striking Nike edition.
