Roma were held to a draw in their opening Serie A game of the season on Sunday night, despite scoring three times at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Giallorossi took the lead three times in front of the home fans, but were pegged back at every turn as the game eventually finished 3-3.

Cengiz Under, Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov all got on the scoresheet - but saw their finishes cancelled out over the course of the 90 minutes by Andrea Pinamonti, Domenico Criscito and Christian Kouame respectively.

With 40,000 fans inside the Olimpico to see the first game of Paulo Fonseca's reign, Roma made almost the perfect start.

Just six minutes into the contest, Cengiz ran beyond the defence, cut inside two defenders, and drilled home a powerful drive to break the deadlock in brilliant fashion.

But Pinamonti soon equalised and, even after Edin Dzeko celebrated his recent contract extension with a clinical run and finish inside the box, Genoa went into the break on level terms thanks to Criscito's penalty.

Kolarov, as confirmed by goalline technology, scored a brilliant free-kick just five minutes into the second half - but yet again Genoa responded, this time with Kouame heading home at the back post.

At that point there were still 15 minutes remaining; but a seventh and decisive goal would elude both sides, with late substitute Davide Zappacosta seeing perhaps the clearest opening slip away in injury time.

Roma are back in action next Sunday - facing Lazio in the Derby della Capitale.

ROMA: Pau Lopez; Florenzi (Zappacosta), Fazio, Juan Jesus (Mancini), Kolarov; Cristante, Pellegrini; Cengiz, Zaniolo, Kluivert (Pastore); Dzeko.

GENOA: Radu; Romero, Zapata, Criscito; Ghiglione, Lerager, Schone, Radovanovic, Barreca; Kouame, Pinamonti.
