Marcano signs for AS Roma

AS Roma are delighted to announce the signing of Spanish defender Ivan Marcano.

Marcano, 30, has signed a three-year contract with the Giallorossi that runs until 30 June 2021. The contract includes an option for a fourth year, a clause that will be activated automatically dependent on the meeting of certain conditions.

Marcano spent the past four seasons with Portuguese side FC Porto, joining the Giallorossi from i Dragoes on a free transfer.

“I am very happy to be here, because Roma is a great club that is moving in the right direction, following a clear sporting project,” Marcano said.

“I also believe that the footballing philosophy of the team will fit well with my strengths and characteristics.”

Marcano, a former Spanish Under-21 international, played more than 150 games for Porto during his time with the club – helping the side lift the Portuguese title last season.

He has previously represented the likes of Villarreal, Rubin Kazan, Olympiakos and Racing Santander.

“The signing of Ivan Marcano is the addition of a player who will bring his quality, his physical strength and his vast experience to the club,” Roma sporting director Monchi said.

“I wish him all the luck in the world with this new adventure.”

Born in Santander, Marcano began his career at his home-town club – making his senior debut for Racing in September 2007. He went on to join Villarreal before enjoying loan spells at Getafe and Greek side Olympiakos.

In two spells with Olympiakos he won the Greek title twice (in 2012 and 2014), adding a Greek Cup triumph in 2012.

Between those two triumphs he had a spell in Russia with Rubin Kazan, where he lifted the Russian Super Cup in 2013.

In his four years at Porto he played in the Champions League group stages every season, with his side escaping the group stages in three of the four campaigns.
