Bavagnoli calls on players to impress in cup

Coach Betty Bavagnoli hopes some fresh faces will take their chance to make an impression when Roma Women kick off their Coppa Italia campaign against Orobica on Saturday.

The Bergamo side are the hosts at Arcene’s Campo Sportivo Comunale on Saturday afternoon, as the Giallorosse play their first-ever game in the competition.

And Bavagnoli hopes her side can celebrate that historic moment by picking up a victory as well.

“It’s an important competition, a prestigious competition,” Bavagnoli told Roma TV. “So we go into it with a desire to do really well, and above all the get out first-ever win in this competition – but of course while being aware of the threat our opponents pose.”

With a number of injuries still to contend with, Bavagnoli is planning to rotate her options – and hopes those players that come into the side grasp the opportunity with both hands. Giadda Greggi, Federico Di Criscio, Agnese Bonfantini and Vanessa Bernauer are among the regular starters almost certain to miss the contest.

“Once again we have a few injury issues, a few players out, so it’s not the ideal scenario – but this means it is also a chance for some of our other players to come in,” Bavagnoli added.

“It’s a great opportunity to see how they are doing, how they compare and play in the place of some of our usual players. So we will go into the game with our approach, our focus, but definitely making a few changes too.”
