Midfielder Maxime Gonalons cannot wait to test himself in Serie A - believing he has the attributes to help Roma achieve great success in the coming seasons.
The France international midfielder completed his move to the Giallorossi on Monday afternoon, signing a four-year deal with the club.
Afterwards, he spoke to Roma TV to discuss his emotions after switching clubs for the first time in his professional career - and his aims and hopes in his new colours.
What’s your first reaction to joining Roma?
Gonalons: "Firstly, I’m very proud to have joined this massive club, one of the best in Italy. I’m both proud and aware of the responsibility. I respect those who have come before me and I want to win trophies here, showing what I’m made of."
What convinced you to sign for Roma?
"I was convinced by everything that’s going on at the club. I came up against this squad in the Europa League and understood the quality of these players then. Also, Roma made it clear they wanted me and I didn’t have a moment’s doubt. After speaking to Monchi and the coach, I realised how determined they are and that’s why the deal was completed very quickly."
What are your main attributes as a player?
"I can play with both feet: I’m naturally right-footed but my left is not bad at all. I’m a defensive midfielder who loves the physical side of the game and is ready to give everything for the shirt. This is what drives me, along with the desire to win trophies and fight for the league title.
"After facing a few Italian clubs, I have the impression the league here is very difficult and highly technical. This is based on my experiences as a player but also by watching on TV. Therefore, I want to throw myself into this league and get to grips with it. I feel it’s made for me."
What are you expecting from this new adventure?
"I spent 17 years at Lyon, the club that made me as a player, and it was a fantastic period of my life. Today I am lucky to have joined Roma, a top-level club that I want to give everything for.
"I want to invest everything I have and give it my all, day after day, in order to help the team."
