Daniele De Rossi issued a short apology to fans and teammates after his red card during Sunday's 1-1 draw with Genoa.
De Rossi was shown a straight red for a foul on Gianluca Lapadula midway through the second half at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, after the referee consulted video footage.
A penalty was also awarded, as Lapadula converted from 12 yards to give the hosts a share of the points.
“It’s a moment that I’m incredibly sorry about,” De Rossi said. “There’s not much to say: we were tussling, I tried to block him with an arm – the footage is ugly.
“Watching the game against Lazio again, I was a bit concerned with how we were marking [Marco] Parolo and Bastos at corners and made a note that I had to be careful… and instead it went how it went.
“I have to apologise to my teammates, the coach and the fans. I am very sorry – but we will have to bounce back from this.”
