AS Roma Awards 2015-16: Player of the Season

POTY

Our unveiling of the award winners for the 2015-16 campaign ends with the main prize - the AS Roma player of the season

Over 210,000 votes were cast in the Roma Awards, and now has come the time to reveal the winner of the top award - as chosen by Giallorossi fans.

In a season where Roma finished as the top goalscorers in the Italian top flight, it is perhaps little surprise that attacking players dominate the final results for the 2015-16 player of the season.

Here is a reminder of the final shortlist:

  • Francesco Totti
  • Wojciech Szczesny
  • Mohamed Salah
  • Radja Nainggolan
  • Alessandro Florenzi
  • Miralem Pjanic
  • Kostas Manolas

And, without further ado, the final results of the voting:

4th: Miralem Pjanic

Pjanic

The midfielder finished joint-top of the assists charts in Serie A last season, an achievement that shows the creative influence the 26-year-old offered in the Giallorossi midfield.

Pjanic was always a threat from set-pieces and was at the heart of some of the most memorable moments of the campaign: his free-kick against Juventus to help Roma to a fine early-season win, for starters, along with the penalty decider against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Those moments, along with a host of vital assists as Luciano Spalletti's side finished the campaign on a 17-match unbeaten run, helped him to fourth in the vote.

3rd: Francesco Totti

Totti

Totti did not play as much as the other names on this shortlist, but he certainly made an impact when the opportunity arose.

Injury threatened to derail his campaign midway through the year but, when he did eventually return to form and fitness, the veteran proved to be an untouchable impact substitution - producing an astounding four goals and two assists over the last seven games of the season.

Those included some unforgettable moments - his four-minute brace against Torino to turn defeat into victory and his free-kick against Genoa to inspire the same turnaround among them.

Heading into his final season as a professional in 2016-17, fans will hope Totti still has plenty more magic moments left in him.

2nd: Radja Nainggolan

Nainggolan

When the Giallorossi finally found a rhythm towards the end of the season, it was Radja Nainggolan who was both one of the primary drivers of that turnaround and one of its main beneficiaries.

Four of the Belgian's six Serie A goals came in the final two months of the season, as he time and time again he delivered crucial moments to keep the Giallorossi in Champions League contention.

His last-minute winner against Napoli was a prime case in point - a pinpoint finish that underlined Roma's new-found mental fortitude. But Nainggolan's influence was not limited to goals - he also finished the campaign having made more tackles than any other player, an illustration of his all-round contribution that evidently found favour with supporters when it came to voting.

AS Roma Player of the Season 2015-16: Mohamed Salah

Salah

Revealed as the fans' signing of the season earlier in the week, a fine first campaign in the Italian capital for Mohamed Salah is capped off by the forward being named the club's Player of the Year.

The supporters evidently took to the Egypt international during 2015-16, as he finished as the club's top goalscorer with 15 goals in all competitions (14 in Serie A). A further six assists made the 24-year-old the club's most devastating attacking outlet, in a squad that was hardly lacking in that regard.

With pace, power and an eye for goal, Salah's presence caused no end of problems for opposition defenders throughout the campaign, becoming a player that could not be left unguarded under any circumstances.

Across the campaign he showcased his ability to be just as devastating from long range (witness his first ever goal for the club, a volley against Sassuolo) as in one-on-one situations (like his last goal of the season, against Milan), and almost all positions in between.

Despite changing managers midway through the season, Salah continued to thrive - and fans will be excited to see what he can continue to achieve next season under Luciano Spalletti, as the Italian makes him a cornerstone of his fluid attacking strategy.

Below, watch our special video to commemorate the award. Congratulations Mohamed!
