Gerson Santos da Silva – the 39th Brazilian player in AS Roma history – was born in Belford Roxo in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 20 May 1997.
After impressing in the Fluminense academy, the left-footed midfielder made his first-team debut in the state championship against Vasco da Gama on 22 February 2015.
Gerson went on to make 41 appearances for Fluminense in all competitions In 2015, scoring five goals.
In the same year he turned out for the Brazil U20 team eight times and starred in the Sudamericano Sub-20 tournament, netting three goals in seven matches.
The Brazilian featured a further 15 times for Fluminense in the first half of 2016 and helped them win the inaugural Primeira Liga. In the final, a 1-0 victory over Atletico Paranaense on 21 April, Gerson played behind the front man in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
A few months before the 19-year-old joined Roma, in July 2016, general manager Mauro Baldissoni said: “Gerson is seen as the most promising U20 midfielder in the world – at least that's what clubs like Barcelona who wanted him at all costs have told us.”
