Club mourns passing of former president Anzalone

AN

The club is saddened to learn of the passing of Gaetano Anzalone, president of the club from 1971 until 1979.

During his important and unforgettable time at the helm of the club, Anzalone oversaw the arrival of Nils Liedholm for the first time - the manager who would go on to bring so much success to the Giallorossi, including the 1982-83 Serie A Title.

He also brought many unforgettable players to the club - including the likes of Pierino Prati, Valerio Spadoni and Giancarlo De Sisti.

Anzalone also had a vast influence away from the first-team - proving to be a driving force behind the development of the club's youth sector and the creation of the club's training centre in Trigoria. Both would proving fundamental to the many successes the club enjoyed in the 1980s.

Five of the first 11 players elected to the club's Hall of Fame made their debuts during Anzalone's presidency: among them Agostino Di Bartolomei, Bruno Conti and Roberto Pruzzo.

In 1974, supported by fellow directors and graphic designer Pietro Gratton, Anzalone guided the introduction of new style to Roma - the Lupetto, introduced in 1978. The new identity was a landmark move in Italian football, becoming a beloved aspect of the club's identity.

Anzalone was succeeded as president by Dino Viola in 1979. The club's thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
