Cristina Cubero from Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo reveals how Atletico Madrid are shaping up for the game at the Stadio Olimpico, highlighting Antoine Griezmann’s importance to the side and her respect for Monchi…

What has changed at Atletico compared to last year and what are the objectives for the season ahead?

"There have been no changes to the squad itself because the ban from FIFA meant the club couldn’t bring in players during the last transfer window. Roma, therefore, will face the same Atletico as last year, a solid outfit with Antoine Griezmann providing the sparkle. The players are very familiar with each other and are coached by a true general in Diego Simeone, who last week renewed his contract until 2020. The Colchoneros will be aiming to win La Liga and have a good run in the Champions League. Their squad might not be the best, but their team spirit is unmatched by anyone."

What formation will Simeone opt for on Tuesday evening in Rome and which players will he pick?

"The formation will be a classic 4-4-2, which the Argentine has firmly embedded in the minds of his players by now. Oblak between the sticks, Godin and Gimenez in central defence, and Juanfran and Hernandez most likely at full-back. Saul, Gabi, Koke and Carrasco will make up the midfield, and up front Griezmann, making his return from suspension in the league, will probably play alongside Torres."

Who will be the danger man for Atletico against Roma?

"Antoine Griezmann can win a game on his own, which is often what happens with Simeone’s team. He’s got ability in his locker that ordinary players don’t have. He hasn’t made a great start to the season, after getting sent off against Girona and missing the next few games. Specifically for this reason, he’ll want to bounce back at the Olimpico."

If you could choose one Giallorossi player, who would you pick? Also, how do you think Roma will get on in this group?

"I’d pick Daniele De Rossi, a real leader who I’d like to see playing in Spain. As for the Giallorossi’s chances of qualifying from Group C, the favourites are clearly Atletico and Chelsea, but Eusebio Di Francesco has some good players in his squad; they can spring a few surprises and defy the initial predictions.

I also think Monchi, who is well respected here in Spain, is the best sporting director in the world at the moment. He can change Roma’s history for the better."
