Gerson: I came back this season with a different mindset

GERSON

On Friday afternoon midfielder Gerson was interviewed by Sky Sport Italia about the season so far and his improvement under coach Eusebio Di Francesco

Read everything the Brazilian had to say in the transcript below...

SKY SPORT: How do you think you've improved this season?

GERSON: “I got off to a good start and came back for pre-season with a different mindset. I know I didn't live up to people's expectations last season and I began the new campaign a more mature player. My family have given me lots of support – my dad especially. I always believed I'd be able to adapt to the European game.”

Do you think you'll start against Chievo?

“I don't know about that but I know I'll be ready if I do get the nod. Whoever plays – whether it's me, [Stephan] El Shaarawy or Patrik [Schick]– it's the team that matters.”

How important was that brace you scored against Fiorentina?

“They were important goals and it was a great feeling. I needed a goal for my confidence. I was training well but I did need a goal. It was good to repay my team-mates for all the help they've given me.”

You've been playing as a wide forward recently and you did against Juventus last season too. Is that your favourite position or do you see yourself as more of a midfielder?

“I enjoy playing as a wide forward but I'm happy in midfield too. I started off in midfield at Fluminense, then I got pushed further forward and I just adapted. As a footballer you have to be willing to do whatever is needed to help the team.”

Which team do you fancy in the Champions League last 16?

“I don't have any real preference. My team-mates and I are working hard so that we're ready for anything. We just want to perform well and make it through to the next round.”

Do you think winning the title is a realistic target for Roma?

“Roma should always set out to win. Roma are a well-respected club in Europe and South America and topping our Champions League group was a boost for our confidence. Now we have to keep working away to consolidate that. We're a close-knit group.”
