Spalletti's press conference before Empoli v Roma

Luciano Spalletti has spoken to the media on the eve of Empoli v Roma. Here's what the Giallorossi coach had to say in today's conference

How did the squad work during the week after the Totti incident?

"He made an appearance in the changing rooms, did everything as I expected and was with the team. He was early for training the next day and went about his business in complete tranquillity. I don't want to talk about this situation any more, it's all been sorted."

How are Kostas Manolas and Alessandro Florenzi? Are they fit?

"They will train today and they are available."

On a technical level, is Totti ready to start or is it too early?

"Tomorrow we're coming up against a different team compared to last week and I have to assess the various situations in depth."

There's been a lot of talk about revenge. How much has that affected you?

"I'll say again that I don't want to talk about this situation any more. I will add that I'd do it again with anyone, as I said right from the very first day I came here. I won't accept anybody placing their own interests before those of the team."

Two of your direct rivals got knocked out of the Europa League yesterday. Is that an advantage or a disadvantage?

"There are various aspects that come up when you make generic analyses like these. As with everything, there are pros and cons to this fact. Matches against them will be extremely tough because now they're out of that competition, they'll attack the league even more. They will give you everything they've got. We need to be ready to tackle them."

How does Roma's set-up change with either Seydou Keita or William Vainqueur on the pitch?

"I think they're both good footballers. If we have to do a quick comparison between them, I would say the former has a bit more experience and quality, while the latter is stronger and fitter thanks to his youth."

Spalletti's press conference before Empoli v Roma

Do you believe you've managed to change Roma's habits and playing style in the month and a half you've been in charge?

"We want to achieve important targets in terms of culture, method and style. In order to do this, I have to be the first to set the example and show the right direction to take. I want the best and most suitable players beside me with this in mind.

"I sometimes think there's some confusion on certain important messages. If you like, I will show you an example of fantastic, brilliant habits. It's very simple and it's not just that the player in question went to recover a lost ball. You've made fun of me for years about this concept of the right habits.

"The example that I will show you is when the score was 4-0 in the 75th minute after he had already scored two goals. This is what I understand as heart and tremendous behaviour.

"If every player in our squad applied the same level, we'll get so much satisfaction for a team that has a brilliant heart.

"I also showed this video to the team. These are the habits that go beyond the movements and situations that everyone sees. You've all seen the goal from the byline and it's clear to everyone that it was a great goal. This recovery is more difficult to spot but it helps the squad and the spirit we're looking for."

Tomorrow there's the possibility of making up ground on Napoli and Juventus. Do you think it's still possible or do you need to focus on Fiorentina and third place?

"We need to focus on Empoli because they will be an extremely tough opponent to overcome. They play the best football and I compliment them on what they're producing this season. No matter where they're playing, they always have the same mentality, diligence, style, precision and balance. They have all the qualities you need. Marco Giampaolo has proved he's a top coach and they will be tricky opponents.

"Empoli have picked up a lot of points thanks to their performances but deserve even more. Once again, I congratulate this club and this team. I have a very strong bond with them, seeing as I began my career there and they put a lot of faith in me by entrusting me with the team.

"The chairman Fabrizio Corsi has proved to be very talented especially, helped first by Pino Vitale and then Marcello Carli. These are two excellent directors when it comes to football knowledge and managing the motivation in a team. It will be a pleasure to see them all together again tomorrow.

"Once again, this team runs the most, plays with the ball on the deck and doesn't have a lot of physical strength so uses their other attributes that revolve around quality. They have unbelievable quality. They have players that may be unknown to a lot of people, but if you watch them for four or five matches, you'll see the quality they have in narrow spaces. It will be really tough tomorrow."

How much can a striker like Edin Dzeko help when you're hunting for points?

"He's fundamental for us. He's our main centre-forward because aside from the ability he has with the ball at his feet, he also gives us physicality, as we saw with his first goal, combined with strength and impact.

"He's on the right track and so are his team-mates in terms of making the most out of his attributes."

Could we see Miralem Pjanic playing further up the field in the wake of Kevin Strootman's return?

"Pjanic likes the ball at his feet, he drops deep to start moves off and then gets forward. If you keep him high up the pitch, he can easily become an axis to play off like all great players. If he touches the ball often, you can feel his presence in the game and he can dictate the pace and play of the team. The more the ball travels around, the more difficult the opposition's life will be."
